Frank Morgan

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

On Sunday afternoon, the 4th of November 2007, Frank Morgan will perform at the
Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( the southwest part of The Netherlands) as guest of the Rein de Graaff Trio. The concert starts at 16.00 hrs.

Frank Morgan was born in Minneapolis, December 1933. He started to play the clarinet when he was a kid and when he was ten years old he changed to alto saxophone. His father, Stanley Morgan, was one of the members of The Inkspots, playing the guitar. As a teenager he moved to the West Coast and won a recording with Freddie Martin as a price in a talent contest. During the 1950s he played in the bebop style and played with Teddy Charles and Kenny Clarke. In 1955 he made an album under his own name, titled Introducing Frank Morgan.
Like so many musicians in the 1950s jazz scene he got involved with drugs and met Art Pepper in jail. It took him several decades to become clean and he had to wait until the mid 1980s before he got some further recognition and started to record ( like Easy Living and Bebop Lives ! both for Contemporary). I have a great 1990 album of Frank Morgan on Antilles ( 422-848 ) titled A Lovesome Thing, with George Cables on piano, David Williams on bass and Lewis Nash drums. A young Roy Hargrove (21 years old) plays his trumpet on three tracks, while Abbey Lincoln is doing some vocals.

Frank Morgan will be accompanied by the Rein de Graaff Trio, featuring Rein de Graaff at the piano, Marius Beets bass and Eric Ineke drums.

Marius Beets received last year the Singer Laren Jazz Award. He is bass player in bands like his Powerhouse Bigband , the family band The Beets Brothers, the Metropole Orkest, the Dutch Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, The Houdini's and of course, last but not least, the Rein de Graaff Trio.

Congratulation Marius.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
