Washboard Blues

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
At the last Doctor Jazz Reunion in Wageningen ( center of the Netherlands) I bougt myself the small booklet Washboard Blues, Een Collage Over De Wereld Van Herman Openneer ( = A collage about the world of Herman Openneer). Herman Openneer is the eminent grise of the Dutch Jazz Archive and a record collector and connoisseur of the pre-war amusement and jazzscene in The Netherlands. This small book was published in a limited edition ( mine is 195/400) in honour to his 60th birthday, April 1995 and contains remembrances from his friends.
Most people remember Herman from his washboard playing and funny remarks at the Animal Crackers period. I have seen this band playing several times, but, unfortunally, I can't remember the exact dates anymore, slipped away in time. These concerts were great events, as this band always surprised its audience with their acts and pre-war jazz- and dance parodies.
It is very interesting to read about the 1950s and 1960s, when Herman was part of the traditional jazz scene of Amsterdam. I found it remarkable to learn that the ideas about jazz, the repertoire, the way-to-play tunes, in certain other traditional jazz-scenes, like The Hague and Breda, where complete different. The rivalry between the cities and the problems playing together seemed to stop when they met at the Doctor Jazz Reunion meetings in Boskoop.
Herman has been the editor of the Doctor Jazz Magazine for years and one of the things they did was writing letters to jazz musicians. They found their addresses in the Leonard Feathers New Edition of The Encyclopedia of Jazz. ( What's in a name? - It was "new" in 1960). This book containes the addresses of most jazz musicians. He gets into contact with several almost forgotten jazzmen, like .....Oscar Aleman. Oscar sent him several letters and some are published in Doctor Jazz Magazine. Aleman tells about how happy he was with the invitation to play at the 1939 7th Jazzwereld Feest in The Hague ( + Scheveningen). His knowledge about the pre-war amusement and jazz record industry is praised by everybody - his sense of humour is unique and his performances on the washboard unforgetable.

Herman Openneer, 72 by now, is still a regular visitor of the Doctor Jazz Reunion.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
Die adresssen vonden ze in Leonard Feather's New Edition of The Encyclopedia of Jazz.
